study questions:
1. Warm-up. What is the most sacrificial thing anyone has done for you (other than Jesus)? What is the most sacrificial thing you have done?
2. Read verses 17-22. What do these verses teach us about the different opinions about Jesus? Why do you think John included theses details about the sign on the cross, and the interaction between Pilate the Jewish leaders?
3. Read verses 23-27. What was happening with the soldiers who crucified Jesus? Why are their actions important? What did Jesus do from the cross, and what does this teach us about Jesus?
4. Read verses 28-37. How would you describe Jesus’ last moments and His death? What did the soldiers do to Jesus and the criminals on either side of Him? Why did they take these actions? What is the significance of the soldier’s actions in these verses (see verses 36-37)?
5. Read verses 38-42. Who were the two men who buried Jesus, and what were the circumstances of Jesus’ burial? See also Matthew 27:37, 60; Mark 15:43; Luke 23:50-51; John 3:1-2, 7:50-52.
6. So what. If you were present at Jesus’ death, which group of people do you think you would have been a part of? Why? How does studying the death of Jesus make you feel about Him? How might this study motivate you in your relationship with God?
