Missions in the Old Testament
1. Warming Up. A common buzz word today in the evangelical community is that we must cultivate a missional lifestyle. What do you think is meant by a missional lifestyle? Why do you think this concept of a missional lifestyle has become so prominent in the last few years? Do you believe that all Christians should develop a missional lifestyle? Why or why not?

2. The Great Commission of the New Testament is found in Matthew 28:18-20. It can be said that the Great Commission in the Old Testament is found in Genesis. Read Genesis 12:1-3. What is Abram told to do? What does God promise will be the result of Abram’s obedience? What is the purpose of this calling of Abram given in the last phrase of verse 3? Why do you think these verses in Genesis are sometimes seen as the Great Commission of the Old Testament (read Matthew 28:18-20 for help in the comparison)?

3. How does the account of Jonah demonstrate God’s heart for all nations? See verses 1:1-2, 3:1-5, 4:10-11. What should our attitude be towards people of other nations around the world? How did Abram (in Genesis 12) and Jonah respond to God sending them on a mission? Why?

4. Throughout the Bible Israel is described as holy and made-up of God’s chosen people. Yet, in the Old Testament Israel is on mission to make God known throughout the world. How do you see that Israel is on mission to make God known to the nations in the following verses: Psalm 67:1-4, Isaiah 49:6, Jeremiah 3:17, Zechariah 2:10-11?

5. So what? What is one thing you have learned or been reminded of in this study that is meaningful to you? Based on your study of mission in the Old Testament, how should living on mission be included in our lives? What does living on mission look like for you in your life? How is God asking you specifically to live on mission?
