For the Next Lesson – Philippians 1:12-18

.Warm up. If God called asked you to sacrifice something in your life, what would be the most difficult thing to sacrifice and why?

.Read verses 12-13. In your own words, what did Paul want the Philippians to know? What was Paul’s situation? How was God using it? Why do you think it was so important to Paul for the Philippians to know all of this? How did Paul’s assertions from verse 13 prove true (see Philippians 4:22)? What does Paul’s attitude and situation teach us about opportunities we have to advance the Gospel? Do you take advantage of these opportunities? Why or why not? How can you grow in this area?

.Read verses 14-17. Who are the two groups of people Paul describes in these verses? What is the motivation and goal of the former group? What is the motivation and goal of the latter group? How do these two very different attitudes affect churches and relationships? Take a minute to really consider your heart when you serve. Which group would better describe you? How so?

.Read verse 18. What is Paul’s perspective on how to respond to these two different groups of people? What brings Paul joy? Do you regularly rejoice for the same reason as Paul? Why or why not?

.So what. These verses also teach us about God. What can you learn about God from these verses and Paul’s situation? Why is this important, and how does it affect your life? What is your big takeaway from your study of this passage?
