    study questions:

For the Next Lesson – Exodus 34:6-9

    1. Read verses 6-7. At the beginning of verse 6 “Lord” (as in Yahweh, the personal name of God for the Hebrew people) is written 3 times. Why do you think this personal name of God is repeated and highlighted? Before you get to the word “but” in verse 7, there are 6 attributes of God listed. Write down and define each of those characteristics. How can you summarize these 6 characteristics in your own words? Which of these characteristics stands out to you?

    2. Read verses 6-7 again. After the word “but” in verse 7, what does God communicate about himself? How would you summarize in your own words what you learn about God here? How do all the attributes in verses 6-7 give us a complete view of God? How would our view of God and our relationship with Him change if He was only merciful, gracious, etc.? How would our view of God and relationship change if He was only “visiting iniquity” on us? Why is this complete view of God important for us to understand?

    3. Read verse 8. How did Moses respond to God’s revelation of himself? Do you respond this way to God, and what would it look like for you to respond to God like this in your daily life?

    4. Read verse 9. How can you summarize Moses’ words? What was Moses scared would happen? Was this a reasonable fear? Why or why not? Should Moses’ response be a normal response for anyone who has a basic understanding of God and of themselves? Why or why not? How can Moses’ response help us to be grateful for the Gospel and Jesus Christ?

    5. So what. What do you learn about God in these verses that either encourages you or challenges you in your walk with God? Which attribute of God do you need to focus on as we begin 2020?
