study questions:

1. Read verse 1. Why did the Lord reject Saul as king over Israel (see 1 Samuel 15:17-26)? What did the Lord plan to do? What was Samuel’s role going to be?

2. Read verses 2-4a. How did Samuel respond to God’s instructions? How did God respond to Samuel? How do you respond to God’s instructions in your life? How do you respond similarly and differently than Samuel?

3. Read verses 4b-7. What happened when Samuel arrived in Bethlehem? What caused Samuel to assume Eliab was the future king of Israel? What was the Lord’s response to Samuel’s assumption?

4. Read verses 8-11. What did Jesse do after Eliab was rejected as king? Why do you think Jesse failed to present his youngest son to Samuel? How did Samuel respond to the situation?

5. Read verses 12-13. How would you imagine and describe the scene as David was brought before Samuel? How do you think Jesse felt as David was brought in? What do you think David was thinking? What about Samuel’s thoughts and feelings? What did the Lord say and what did Samuel do when David entered the room? What was the result of this humble anointing of the future king of Israel (vs. 13b)?

6. So what? When choosing the next king of Israel, what was God looking for? What does this teach us about how we
