For the Next Lesson – Genesis 19:30-38
.Read verse 30 and also Genesis 19:18-22. Why was Lot initially living in Zoar, and why did Lot not live in the hills as the angels originally directed? Why do you think Lot was now afraid to live in Zoar? Have you or do you ever make decisions based on fear and emotion like Lot? How do things end up when you make decisions this way?
.Read verses 31-33. What did Lot’s eldest daughter do in these verses? What was her motivation according to verse 32? What do you think was her real motivation? Do you think living in Sodom, a wicked and sexually perverse place, influenced her actions? How so? How did Lot’s life and example influence his daughter?
.Read verses 34-38. What did Lot’s eldest daughter say to the younger daughter? What did Lot’s younger daughter do? Why do you think we only read about the eldest daughter speaking and never the younger? What was the motivation for this action according to verse 24? Again, what do you think was the real motivation for these actions? How could the younger daughter have responded to stop these horrible actions?
.So what. What factors do you believe influenced and caused these daughters to shamelessly act in this distasteful way? What are the things that influence and cause us to embrace sin? Are the things that influence us similar to influences for the daughters? How so? What happens when we are not careful about what we allow to influence us (see also Jeremiah 8:12)? What can we do to develop lifestyles where we are more influenced by God than by the sinful culture that is around us? How can you personally grow in this area?
