study questions:

1. Read verses 1-3. How long after restarting the construction of the Temple did Haggai give this second message (see Haggai 1:15)? To whom is this message addressed? Solomon’s Temple (the first Temple) was destroyed 66 years before this message was given. What purpose do you think Haggai had in mind as he asked the three rhetorical questions in verse 3? What point was he trying to make? What do you think the Jews were struggling with?

2. Read verses 4-5. Why are the words “yet now” important to this message? What admonition is given three times, and why do you think Haggai repeats the same thing three times in a row? What are the other two commands Haggai gives to the people? According to these verses, why should the people follow God’s admonitions and commands?

3. Read verses 6-9. These verses refer to the future Temple in the Millennial Kingdom. What does God promise about the future Temple? What will be the most significant thing that will happen in the future Temple according to verse 9? Why do you think the people needed to be reminded of what would happen in the future? What do you learn about God here?

4. So what. Which admonitions and commands given in verses 3-5 do you need to hear most? Why? What are the “yet now” things in your life that threaten to discourage you in your walk with God? What realities about God from this passage can you embrace to help you overcome these discouragements.
