For the Next Lesson – Genesis 26:6-35

1. Read verses 6-11. Why did Isaac settle in Gerar (see verses 2-5)? Why did Isaac lie and pass off Rebekah as his sister? How did Abimelech find out that Rebekah was Isaac’s wife, and how did Abimelech respond? Considering why Isaac settled in Gerar, why might it be surprising that Isaac felt the need to lie about Rebekah? Do you ever respond like Isaac to challenges you face in life? How so?

2. Read verses 12-22. What happened to Isaac as he lived in Gerar, and who caused this outcome? How did Abimelech respond? What challenges did Isaac face when he moved to the Valley of Gerar? What do you think enabled Isaac to respond the way he did? If you were Isaac, how do you think you would have responded to these challenges (keep in mind they were in the middle of a famine)? Why would you have responded this way? How can what you learn in these verses help you to face challenges in your life?

3. Read verses 23-33. What command did God give to Isaac? According to verses 24-25, why should Isaac have followed this command? What did Abimelech notice about Isaac, and what did Abimelech do about it? How does the command in verse 24 apply to you?

4. Read verses 34-35. What happened with Esau, and what was the result? What does this tell us about the importance of making a careful and wise choice when getting married?

5. So what. What fears are you facing during this season in your life? How can you go about following God’s command to “fear not? What can enable you to succeed in living without fear?
