The Foolishness of the Cross
1 Corinthians 1:18-31
No matter how demeaning the voice of our culture, we have confidence in the cross of Christ.
The cross of Christ provides superior wisdom. (18-29)

As you study this passage note that the word “For” is used six times total in verses 18, 19, 21, 22, 25 and 26. Each time Paul uses “For” he is giving more explanation about the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ.
1. Read verse 18. What word is used for the Gospel in this verse, and why do you think Paul used this word? How does Paul describe the Gospel?
2. Read verses 19-20. What does the Gospel do to human wisdom and the “wise”? What are present -day philosophies or ways of thinking that the Gospel contradicts?
3. Read verse 21. What point is Paul making here about the Gospel and how people see the Gospel? How do people try to make their own way to God?
4. Read verses 22-24. How do Jews and Greeks view the Gospel? How do people today view the Gospel? How does Paul describe the Gospel?
5. Read verse 25. How does Paul explain the power of the Gospel compared to the strength and efforts of men? Why is this important to recognize?
6. Read verses 26-28. What does the Gospel do according to these verses? Why do you think Paul pointed this out?
7. Read verses 29-31. What is the purpose of the Gospel, and what does it accomplish? What do “righteousness”, “sanctification” and “redemption” mean? What does Paul mean when he says we should “boast in the Lord” considering the context of Paul explaining the Gospel?
8. So what. Take a few minutes to review your answers to the questions above. What have you learned or been reminded about the Gospel that sticks out the most? How do Paul’s explanations about the Gospel encourage you in your walk with God? Does Paul’s explanations about the Gospel encourages you to share the Gospel with others? Why or why not?
