study questions:

For the Next Lesson: Hebrews 12:14-29

1) Read verses 12:14-17. What is peace and holiness? Why will no one see the Lord without holiness? What makes a person holy? What happens when one fails to obtain the grace of God? How does the grace of God help us strive for peace and holiness? Is there anyone in your life who you need to strive for peace with? Have you sought God’s grace in this pursuit?

2) Read verses 12:18-21. How do you typically describe God to others? How does the author describe God? What event is he referring to (see Exodus 20:18-21)? Why is it important to remember God’s holiness? Do you think it is right for Christians to fear God? Why or why not? What do we tend to fear instead of God? How might a proper fear of God affect the way we walk through the uncertainties of life?

3) Read verses 12:22-24. Take note of the contrast between Mount Sinai and Mount Zion in the previous verses. What mount have believers in Christ come to? How do we have such direct access to God when the Israelites did not? How often do you think about these heavenly realities in your daily life? What are ways that you can meditate (think deeply) on your future in Heaven with God more? How might your life change as a result?

4) Read verses 12:25-27. In what ways do we “refuse” or “reject” God’s words toward us? From God’s perspective, what do you think a refusal to listen might communicate? How might God’s holy character influence us to listen and obey? How might our future in Heaven influence us to listen and obey? What commands of God do you find difficult to obey? Why?

5) Read verses 12:28, 29. Why is thankfulness the appropriate response to God’s holy character and our forgiven status in heaven? Why is it important to fear God as Christians?
