For the Next Lesson – Genesis 35:16-29
Note: In these verses we come to the end of the major section of Genesis that described the life of Jacob that was renamed Israel. This section began in 25:19 with, “These are the generations of Isaac…”It ends with the death of Isaac in 35:29. After one chapter (36) about Esau, the rest of Genesis is dominated by “the generations of Jacob” which focuses on Jacob’s son Joseph.
1.Read verses 16-20.What series of events happened as Jacob and his family traveled from Bethel? How do you think Jacob felt about this (see Genesis 29:30)?Note that Rachel’s “soul was departing”.This is the one place in the Old Testament that talks about the soul giving life to the body. What happens to our soul and body when we die?Check out Luke 23:39-43 and 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 for more insight. Are you “of good courage” as you consider what you learn about life and death in theses passages? Why or why not?
2.Read verses 21-22.What did Reuben do, and why do you think he did it?What did Israel do in response to this offense (see also 1 Chronicles 5:1-2 and Genesis 49:3-4)?Why do you think God through Moses included this account of Reuben’s crude sin?
3.Read verses 22-26.Listed here are all 12 sons of Israel (Jacob). What do you notice about this list? How should we view the children that God gives to us (see Psalm 127:3-5)?If we view children this way, how will it affect the way we treat them and parent them? How will it affect our attitudes toward them? Why do you think God through Moses included this summary of the sons of Jacob?
4.Read verses 27-29.What happens in these last verses? Why is it significant that both Esau and Jacob buried their father together? Why do you think God through Moses included this summary of Isaac’s death and burial?
5.So what.A lot of life happened in this passage.Take a few moments to list all the significant events in the life of Jacob described in verses 16-29. Now, take some time to think about the significant events that have happened in your life in the last 10 years. How have you seen God’s faithfulness throughout these events? How can you trust God for the next 10 years and the events you will face?
