Real Lessons for Real Life:

study questions:

1. Read verses 1-4. These first three verses describe the setting of this famous miracle. How would you describe the setting? Where did this miracle happen? What did the area look like? When did it happen? Who was there? Why were they there? What is the mood of the people there? What were they doing?

2. Read verses 5-10. How would you summarize the conversation between Jesus and his disciples? What do you believe they were thinking during this interaction? What do you think John means when he said Jesus was testing Phillip in verse 6? How many people were there (see also Matthew 14:21)? Do you think the disciples had any idea what Jesus was going to do when he had the people sit down?

3. Read verses 11-13. What two things did Jesus do in verse 11? How do these verses describe the amount of food that was consumed? How much was left over compared to how much they started with? Why do you think John included the amount of food that was leftover?

4. Read verses 14-15. How did the people react to this sign/miracle? Why do you think Jesus didn’t allow himself to be made king? What did Jesus do in response to this strong reaction?

5. So what? The importance of this miracle is illustrated by the fact that it is the only miracle (other than the resurrection) recorded in all four Gospels. Why do you think this miracle is so important? Take a few minutes to brainstorm and list all the things we can learn about Jesus through this miracle. How do the things you learn about Jesus apply to your life?
