study questions:

1. Read verses 43-45. Where was Jesus for the two days mentioned in verse 43 and where was he going next? Most English translations use the word “country” in verse 44 instead of “hometown” as translated in the ESV. In light of where Jesus was traveling from, where he is traveling to, and John 1:11; what point is John making in verse 44? What did Jesus do in Jerusalem that caused the Galileans to welcome him (see John 2:13-23)?

2. Read verses 46-50. What town in Galilee did Jesus go to? Where was the official from, and what was his request of Jesus? What observations can you make about the conversation between Jesus and the official? What can you learn about the official’s faith and attitude from this conversation and the official’s response?

3. Read verses 51-54. How would you summarize the interaction between the official and his servants? What is the difference between the official believing in verse 50 versus the official believing in verse 53? Why do you think the entire household of the official believed?

4. So what? What do you learn (or are reminded) about Jesus in these verses? Based on what you learn about Jesus, how does it help you trust him more? What is one area of your life where you could trust Jesus more? Make sure to share with each other (or a friend if doing this alone) this one area and pray for each other.
