For the Next Lesson: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

  1. Warm up. What is the most romantic movie or movie scene you have ever seen? What is the greatest act of love you have seen in a movie? How are love and romance different?
  2. Read verses 1-3. These verses talk about the preeminence of love. What does preeminence mean? In verse 1, what is love greater than? What are you if you do not have love? What are the characteristics of a gong or symbol, and how does this correspond to a person? In verse 2, what is love greater than? What are you if you do not have love? In verse 3, what is love greater than? What are you if you do not have love?
  3. Read verses 4-6. These verses speak to the practical nature of love. How many positive statements about love are made? How many negative or “not” statements are made? Which of these statements about love sticks out most to you? Based on theses verses, how would you define love in a sentence or less?
  4. Read verses 8-13. These verses describe the permanence of love. What will pass away while love still endures? What other very important aspects of our walk with God is love greater than (see vs. 13.)? When will love end? Why is it important in context for the Corinthians to recognize the permanence of love? Why is it important for us to understand the permanence of love?
  5. So what. What have you learned about the preeminence of love? The practical nature of love? The permanence of love? Does loving other people carry the importance in your life that it should? How so? How do you need to grow in how you love other people? Get specific. Do you need to confess anything? Repent? Ask for forgiveness? Nothing becomes dynamic until it becomes specific.
