study questions:

1. Read verses 15-17. Why do you think obeying God’s commandments is equated with loving God? Is it difficult to walk in obedience to God and in the grace of God at the same time? How so? How is Jesus sending the “Helper” related to this idea of obedience? What do you learn about the Helper in these verses, and why are these things important for each of us as walk with Christ?

2. Read verses 18-21. Jesus continues to encourage the disciples in verses 18-21. List several ways that Jesus offers encouragement in these verses for the disciples? How do these same things apply to us?

3. Read verses 22-26. How would you summarize Judas’ question in your own words? What is Jesus’ response in verses 23-24? What will the Helper do according to verse 26? Who is the Helper, and how does sending Him reflect God’s love for us?

4. Read verses 27-31. How is the peace Jesus gives different from the peace of the world? Are you personally experiencing the peace that Jesus gives? Why or why not? How do Jesus’ words in verses 28-31 help the disciples to deal with their fear and anxiety? How are they comforting for you?

5. So what? How does the presence of the Holy Spirit in us and in our lives help us to have peace and confidence as we walk through life? What are you taking away from this passage that impacts the way you live?
