Habakkuk 1

1. Warm-up: Has there ever been something that has caused you to question God? (A difficult theological question? Hard circumstance in life? An injustice you have observed? Loss of a loved one? A hurtful experience with another Christian? Something else?) What were the circumstances and how did you handle it?

2. Read verses 1-4. How would you describe Habakkuk’s state of mind? What is Habakkuk’s complaint? In your own words, what Is Habakkuk questioning God about?

3. Read verses 5-11. How did God respond to Habakkuk in verse 5? What was God’s plan according to verse 6? How are the Chaldeans (Babylonians) described in verses 7-11?

4. Read verses 12-17. Was Habakkuk happy with God’s answer (in vv. 5-11) to his previous questions (from vv. 1-4)? Why or why not? What was Habakkuk’s problem with the Chaldeans (see vs. 13)? In verses 14-17 who are the “fish” and who is doing the “fishing”? With this in mind, what is Habakkuk asking in verse 17? How would you summarize Habakkuk’s problem with God in your own words?

5. So what. Is it ok to question God like Habakkuk? Why or why not? What about God’s character or what can you find in Scripture that supports your answer? What does verse 5 teach us about God and how we should see Him even when life is confusing? What is one specific thing you can take from Habakkuk 1 that challenges or encourages you in your walk with God?
