study questions:

For the Next Lesson: Matthew 21:1-11

1. Read verses 1-3. What is Jesus planning? What is the significance of Jesus saying “The Lord needs them”? What right does Jesus have over another person’s property (Mark 11:5-6)? How do Jesus’ plans fit into His prediction in Matthew 20:17-19? How might you have reacted if you were one of the two disciples seeking out the donkeys or even the donkeys’ owners?

2. Read verses 4 & 5. What does this prophecy say about Jesus? What does it say about His messianic mission (Zech. 9:9)? Many expected Jesus to march into Jerusalem and overthrow the Romans. How does this prophecy, fully understood after His resurrection (John 12:16), debunk the overthrow rumors? In what other ways was Jesus misunderstood?

3. Read verses 6-9. Did Jesus plan for this procession? What is the significance of the cloaks being laid down on the road? Did the crowd see Jesus as their king? What is the significance of the declaration “Hosanna to the Son of David?” Should Jesus have silenced the crowd (Luke 19:39)?

4. Read verses 10 & 11. Jesus caused a serious commotion in Jerusalem. Do you suppose He knew that would happen? Why or why not? Do you believe the crowd’s description of Jesus was complete? What was missing? Why do you think they answered that way? How do you describe Jesus to others?

5. So what. Do you see Jesus as your King? Why or why not? If you were to fully embrace Jesus as your king, how would your life change?
