study questions:

1. Read Matthew 7:13-14. When Jesus refers to the gate, what gate do you think this is an entrance to? See Matthew 5:3, Ephesians 2:4-9, John 3:16-18, 14:6 for help. In what ways do these verses help explain why the right gate is narrow and the wrong gate is wide? Remembering all you can about the Sermon on the Mount (especially 5:20) how has Jesus shown the differences of the two gates?

2. Read Matthew 7:15-20, 5:20 and chapter 23. Who do you think Jesus has in mind when He says “Watch out for false prophets?” Think of as many ways as you can regarding the bad fruit these men were producing. Review Matthew 5:3-16 and explain the good fruit that is produced by someone who enters through the narrow gate. Which gate are you trying to enter through and are you listening to any false teachers of our day?

3. Read Matthew 7:21-23 and John 6:25-30. Explain why the teachers of Jesus’ day were not going to enter into the kingdom of God. Can you think of modern day examples of false teachers who might even think they are going to get a ticket into heaven?

4. Read Matthew 7:24-27. Using the context of this study and the whole of the Sermon on the Mount, explain what the two foundations are that Jesus is referring to. In this passage what bad news does Jesus predict for all people? How does this contradict what is known as health and wealth prosperity teaching? What have you learned from this study?

5. Read Matthew 7:28-29. Try and describe what it would have been like to sit and listen to Jesus’ teaching.
