study questions:
1. Read Matthew 5:13. Try and think of at least two things salt was used for in Jesus’ day. What happens when salt loses its saltiness in regard to these two things? Jesus is talking to a Jewish audience; what do you think he means when he says they are the salt of the world? What does Jesus say is done to salt when it loses its saltiness? Putting this all together what do you think he is getting at as he is teaching to this particular audience?
2. How does this passage apply to you? In what ways are you the salt of the earth? Reread the beatitudes found in verses 3-12 and beside each one explain how that attitude could make you a very salty person.
3. Read Matthew 5:14-16. In what ways do you think the nation of Israel was to be a light in the world or a light to other people and other nations? If you were at a campout what two things can you think of that light does? What command does Jesus give to his Jewish audience? How do you think they had been doing in regard to his command? Before answering, go back and review verses 3-12 again. How would all that Jesus had taught from verses 3-16 have shown a Jewish man or woman living under a works mentality that they had missed the boat?
4. How do you think you can be a light in the world today? Before answering, review verses 3-12 once more.
