Luke 10:25-37
- Read Luke 25-28. What kind of question does the lawyer ask? How does Jesus answer him? Have you ever been asked an insincere question about Christianity? Jesus directs the Lawyer to the “written” scriptures. What does that teach us about the Bible? (It is authoritative, sufficient, and purposeful). Loving God requires faith in God. If someone asked you about inheriting eternal life what would you say?
- Read Luke 29-30. The Lawyer should have realized that no one can perfectly love God and perfectly love others. Instead, he desired to “justify himself.” How else does pride get in the way of repentance and faith in Christ? What was the Lawyer really asking in his question “who is my neighbor?”Jesus responds to the Lawyer’s self-justifying question with a story. Why? The road to Jericho is 17 miles long down a steep decline. It is perfect for robbers to wait and hide.
- Read Luke 31–35. The original listeners would have felt relief upon hearing “by chance, a priest…” What excuses do you think went through the priest’s head to continue on the other side? A Levite is a priest’s assistant. Their reluctance to help the hurting man would have shocked the listeners of this story. What is the modern-day equivalent of the priest not helping? (Pastor, doctor, etc.) A Samaritan was a half-Jew half–Gentile. They were hated by the Jews. Why does Jesus choose a Samaritan to be the “Neighbor”? List out all the ways the Samaritan loved this man. Keep in mind that two denarii is one to two days wages.
- Read Luke 36-37. How does Jesus change the Lawyer’s original question? Why is that important? Jesus tells the man to “go and do likewise.” How is sacrificial love to others tied to our faith in God? What is the Gospel? How does the Gospel give us “neighbor eyes?” In our current season of quarantine, what are some creative ways you can meet your hurting neighbor’s needs and meet them generously?
