study questions:
From John 1:19 through 12:50 we get to see the signs and proof that Jesus is the Son of God and the anticipated Messiah. Initially in 1:19-34 we get to see John the Baptist testify about Jesus.
1. Read verses 19-24. Who came to question John? Why do you think they came? How did John respond initially (verses 20-21)? Why do you think he responded this way? How does John describe himself in verse 26 in response to the persistent questioning? Read Isaiah 40:1-5. How do these verses in Isaiah relate or shed light on the role of John the Baptist and on Jesus? How would you summarize the role of John the Baptist in your own words? How is John’s role the same and/or different from our role as a witness?
2. Read verses 25-28. What do you think John means by “I baptize with water” (hint compare with 1:33)? How would you describe John’s attitude toward Jesus?
3. Read verses 29-31. Why is Jesus being called the “Lamb of God” significant (see Exodus 12:21-23)? How are the words “takes away the sin of the world” rooted in Old Testament prophecy about Jesus (see Isaiah 53:7, 12)? How is your view of Jesus influenced when you consider how His coming is rooted in and predicted about in the Old Testament?
4. Read verses 32-34. Why do you think John the Baptist makes the point twice (verses 31 and 33) that he did not know Jesus (remember John and Jesus are relatives)? What do you think John means when he says he doesn’t know Jesus? How did John recognize the identity of Jesus? Who does John say Jesus is?
5. So what? How has your attitude and/or view of Jesus been impacted by this passage? What is your biggest take-away from this passage that applies directly to your life?
