For the Next Lesson - Genesis 25:19-34
1. Read verses 19-21. What problem did Isaac and Rebekah face? How would this situation have been challenging and hurtful for them? Where did Isaac go to find a solution for their problem? How long did it take for God to answer Isaac’s prayer (see also verse 26)? Where do you typically go when you have a problem, and why do you go there? Are you willing to wait on God to solve your problems and answer your prayers like Isaac? What keeps you from waiting on God’s provision for your life? What can help and encourage you to wait on God’s provision?
2. Read verses 22-26. What was happening to Rebekah’s children, and where did Rebekah turn for answers? What was God’s response? What nations came from these two babies, and what were the babies’ names? Do you have a pattern in your life of turning to God when you are confused or need wisdom? Why or why not?
3. Read verses 27-34. Why did Isaac love Esau more than Jacob (verse 28)? Do you think this is a good reason for preferring one child over another? Why was Esau willing to sell his birthright to Jacob? What does this tell us about Esau and what was most important in his life? How is Esau similar to his father in his approach to life (remember verse 28)? What do you believe motivated Jacob to take advantage of Esau? How would you summarize the character of Esau? How would you summarize the character of Jacob? Have you ever struggled with the same issues as either Esau or Jacob? How so?
4. So what. What are you taking away from this passage that challenges you to trust God more? What are you taking away from this passage that challenges you to consider how your desires, appetites and selfishness affect your life and the lives of others?
