study questions:

1. Read John 20:30-31. Why was the Gospel of John written? What is the goal of the author? What is the anticipated result of those who learn about Jesus through this book? How is the purpose of the Gospel of John similar to the purpose of our lives as Christians?

2. Read John 1:1-3. Who is the Word (see John 1:14)? What do these verses teach us about when the Word existed? Our church doctrinal statement claims the following, “We believe in one true and living God, who is the creator of all things. One in essence, He is infinitely perfect and eternally exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” How do these verses in John support our doctrinal claim about God? Why are these verses important to our understanding of Jesus?

3. Read John 1:3. What role did the Word have in creation? Was the Word’s role in creation important? Why or why not? Read Genesis 1:1-2, what similarities do you find between these verses in Genesis and in John 1:1-3? How do these similarities help you to better understand the power, character and nature of Jesus?

4. Read John 1:4-5. According to these verses, what did the Word bring to mankind? How does the metaphor of light and dark help us better understand the significance of the Word to mankind? How does Jesus bring us life? How is Jesus the light?

5. So what? Why is it important that we understand Jesus’ role in creation as part of the Trinity? How has Jesus brought “life” to your life? How does Jesus bring light out of darkness for you personally?
