study questions:
For the Next Lesson: 1 Corinthians 15:20-34
1. Read verses 20-24. What does “fallen asleep” mean in verse 20? In regards to bodily resurrection, how is Christ the “firstfruits” of those who have fallen asleep? How would you explain, in your own words, Paul’s point in verses 21 -22 (see also Rom. 5:18-21)? Why do you think Paul explains the sequence of events in verses 23-24? How does this sequence of events give us confidence and hope for our future (see also John 14:2-3, 1 Thess. 4:16)?
2. Read verses 25-28. Why do you think that Paul calls death the “last” enemy? How do your personal experiences support this idea that death is truly an enemy? What is the ultimate place of Jesus in the universe (see also Phil. 2:9-11)? What is God the Father’s ultimate role? How does this knowledge about the future encourage you in your life today? How does this encourage your faith in God?
3. Read verses 29-32. In verse 29 Paul describes the beliefs of some who opposed the doctrine of the bodily resurrection of Christians. In verses 30-32 Paul explains his lifestyle that is motivated by his belief in his own bodily resurrection as a Christian. How would you describe Paul’s lifestyle? What are some specific things Paul has faced? What is his attitude? According to the verse 32, what kind of lifestyle would we end up embracing if we didn’t believe in the bodily resurrection of Christians? How can you see the reality of this played out in our culture today?
4. Read verses 33-34. What rebukes does Paul give the Corinthians? What is Paul’s tone here? What does he mean by, “I say this to your shame”? Why do you think he is so passionate? What can you learn from this rebuke that applies to your life?
5. So what. Why is the doctrine of the bodily resurrection of Christians so important? How does your future bodily resurrection to live with Christ forever motivate you to live for Christ today?
