Seeking God’s Heart for the Orphan

This coming Sunday we celebrate the Sanctity of Human Life. We often focus, and rightly so, on the Sanctity of unborn lives. It is also important we continue to consider the sanctity of life for children who don’t have parents to love, nurture, train and protect them. What is God’s heart for the fatherless and orphans?

Read Exodus 22:21-24. What command does God give in here? What does God promise to do for those who disobey? What do you learn about God’s heart for widows and orphans?

Read Deuteronomy 24:19-20. What are God’s instructions in this passage? Who benefits from God’s instructions, and how do they benefit? What do you learn about God’s heart for the orphan and others who are underprivileged?

Read Psalm 82:3. What command is given in this psalm? What do you learn about God’s heart?

Read Isaiah 1:16-17. What are God’s instructions in this passage for living a godly life? What do you learn about God’s heart? What do you learn about His desire for us?

Read James 1:27. How is a pure and godly life expressed according to this passage? What do you learn about God’s heart?

So what? As you consider all of these passages, how would you summarize God’s heart for orphans? What role should the church play in caring for orphans? How should you personally express God’s heart for the orphan in your own life?
