study questions:
Deuteronomy 6:1-9
Warm-up. When you think about what it means to really love someone, what comes to mind? What do you think it means to love God? How should we express our love for God?
Read verses 1-3. The commandment, statues and rules talked about in this passage refer to the Mosaic Law under which the Jewish people lived until Jesus ushered in the New Covenant with His death, burial and resurrection. Whether under the Mosaic Law or the Law of Christ, we should still obey God. What are three reasons we should obey God’s commands according to theses verses? Why are these reasons important, and how do they apply to your life today?
Read verse 4. For Jews this verse is called the Shema which is the Hebrew word for “hear”. It is a central Jewish prayer recited multiple times a day. What is this verse communicating about God? Why do you think this verse is so important to Jewish people? Should this verse be equally important to us as Christians? Why or why not? Do you personally revere God? How so?
Read verses 5-9. According to these verses, how should we respond to the God talked about in verse 4? Take time to list the ways we should respond as explained in these verses. Which of these responses is present in your life now? Which response is not commonplace in your life? Why are each of these responses important?
So what? What has stood out to you most in your study of this passage? How would you like to grow in how you are both revering and responding to God?
