For the Next Lesson: Genesis 1:1

Genesis is the book of beginnings where we see the beginnings of the universe, the earth, the human race, marriage, sin, the nations, language, the Hebrew nation and more. In Genesis we find the foundation for our understanding of God and the universe… for everything we believe as Christians.

1. Read Genesis 1:1. What is the subject of verse 1 and of the first subject of the entire Bible? Why is this significant? What does this teach us about the subject matter of the book of Genesis? What does this teach us about what and who should be first in our lives?

2. Read Genesis 1:1. When this verse says “in the beginning” it is speaking of time itself. What and/or who existed before time? What can we learn about God and time in the following verses: Job 26:6, Psalm 90:2-4, 2 Peter 3:8, Revelation 1:8? Why is it important to recognize how God relates to time?

3. Read Genesis 1:1. The words “heavens and earth” are another way to say that God created everything. Why is it important to recognize that God created everything? How did God create everything (see also Psalm 33:6,9 and Revelation 4:11)? What does this reality teach us about God’s power, creativity, authority, sovereignty, etc.? How should we respond to these realities about God? How do these realities affect how we relate to God?

4. Read Genesis 1:1. As Christ-followers who have the Old and New Testament, we have been taught about the Trinity (there is one God, existing in three persons, each person of the Trinity is fully God). According to John 1:1-3, Colossians 1:16-17, and 1 Corinthians 8:6; how was Jesus involved in creation? How was the Holy Spirit involved in creation (see Genesis 1:2, Psalm 104:30)? Why is it important to understand the entire Trinity took part in creation and not just God the Father?

5. So what. What have you learned or been reminded about God in these verses that encourages or challenges you? How can you relate better to God this week based on your renewed view of God?
