Biblical church leadership
SERMON NOTES:

Biblical Church Leadership…

… operates under the umbrella of Jesus Christ. (Colossians 1:15-20)

… focuses on serving, not on position. (Mark 10:35-45)

… values character over talent. (1 Timothy 3:1-13)

… includes elders and sometimes deacons. (1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9)

Why form a Deacon Team now?

What does a Deacon Team do? (Acts 6:1-7)

study questions:

1. Read 1 Peter 5:1-5. Based on this passage, how would you describe the role of an Elder in the church? How does Peter describe the proper attitude of an Elder in verses 2-4? Based on all five verses, how would you summarize how the relationship between the Elders of a church and the members of a congregation should work?

2. Read 1 Timothy 3:1-7. What should be true of an Elder in regard to his family? In his personal life? In his relationship with the community at large? How would you summarize this list in 2-5 words (hint: check out verse 2) and why?

3. Read Acts 6:1-7. What was the problem that needed to be addressed? How was the problem solved? How were the men chosen who became the solution to this problem? What was the ultimate outcome of this solution described in verse 7? Assuming this passage describes deacons, how would you define the role of a deacon in the church?

4. Read 1 Timothy 3:8-13. What should be true about deacons in regard to his family? In his personal life? In relationship with his community?

5. So what? Why do you think it is important to have a biblical understanding of church leadership/governance? What is one thing you have learned or been reminded of that either encourages or challenges you? Take a few moments to pray for the leadership of our church.
