Jesus died and rose from the grave.
SERMON NOTES:

Did Jesus really die?

Was the tomb really empty?

Did someone steal his body?

Did people really see Jesus alive after his death?

study questions:

The historical reality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is an essential part of our faith in Jesus Christ. Take some time to look at the resurrection account from the perspective of each of the Gospel writers.

1. Read Matthew 28:1-15. As you read through this passage take some time to note exactly what happened when Jesus rose from the dead. Who first learned that Jesus had risen from the dead, and how did they learn this? When did it all happen? What did the angel look like, and what did he tell the women? How did the guards respond to the situation? What plans were made to cover-up the resurrection?

2. Read Mark 16:1-8. What do you learn about the resurrection from Mark’s perspective that adds to what you read in Matthew?

3. Read Luke 24:1-12. What further insights can you gain from Luke’s perspective?

4. Read John 20:1-18. What does John include that the other Gospel accounts’ omit? Recognizing that John serves as a sort of “supplemental” Gospel that is more focused on theology than the other Gospels, why do you think that John chose these details to add?

5. So what? As you read through the four accounts of Jesus’ resurrection, what impresses you the most? How do you think you would have responded if you were the guards? The women who first arrived? The disciples? What is one thing you are taking away from your discussion about the resurrection that encourages you in your relationship with God?
