study questions:

1. Read verses 21-30. What bad news did Jesus give the disciples and how did they react? How do you think Jesus felt? How did Jesus handle the situation? In verse 23, there is a disciple who describes himself as the disciple “whom Jesus loved”. Who is this disciple, and why do you think he is described this way? Have you ever thought about calling yourself the “person whom Jesus loves”? Why or why not?

2. Read verses 31-35. What did Jesus tell the disciples in verses 31-33? Why do you think he gave them this news? What did Jesus command the disciples to do in verses 34-35? How is this a new commandment? What importance do you think Jesus placed on this commandment (see also Matthew 22:34-40)? What does this look like in real, everyday life (See 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 and Romans 12:9-21)?

3. Read verses 36-38. How would you describe the tone of the conversation between Peter and Jesus? What did Jesus say to Peter in verse 38, and why do you think Jesus told him this? How do you think Peter felt after this interaction? Have you ever felt this way in your interactions with God? How so?

4. So what? Do you truly feel loved by Jesus in everyday life? Why or why not? What must happen for you to feel more loved b God?How would you describe your current level of loving other people? In what ways to you do well, and in what ways could you grow? How does your perception of God’s love for you impact your ability to love others? What is one thing you are taking away from this study that applies to your life?
