Jesus gives us the opportunity to experience uniquely wonderful relationships with God and with each other.
SERMON NOTES:

John 13:1-20

The Demonstration: Jesus serves his disciples in a bizarre way. (1-5)

The Explanation: Jesus provides ongoing spiritual cleansing. (6-11)

The Exhortation: Jesus teaches us to serve each other as he served. (12-20)

How can we experience these vertical and horizontal blessings?

study questions:

1. Read verse 1. In this verse it says that Jesus “loved them to the end”. Who did Jesus love, and how did he love them? How you have experienced the love of Jesus personally in your life?

2. Read verses 2-5. What are the three things that Jesus knows in verse 3? What do these things have to do with Jesus’ actions in verses 4-5? Culturally speaking, why are Jesus’ actions so significant to the disciples?

3. Read verse 6-11. Why was Peter so adamant about Jesus not washing his feet? What does Jesus teach Peter through their interaction and dialogue?

4. Read verses 12-17. According to verse 15, why did Jesus wash the disciples’ feet? What is Jesus’ expectation for how the disciples should treat each other? What point is Jesus making in verse 16? What is the result of serving each other according to verse 17? Why is this important for us to remember?

5. Read verses 18-20. What point is Jesus making in these verses? Why do you think John includes these verses and words of Jesus in this gospel?

So what? What keeps you from serving others like Jesus demonstrates and commands in this passage? What needs to happen in your life for you to grow in how you “wash one another’s feet”?
