study questions:

1. Read 2 Samuel 19:16-23. Who approached David on his way back to Jerusalem? What did this person want and how did David respond? What do you think motivated David to respond this way? What in David’s past may have influenced his actions in theses verses (see 2 Samuel 11-12 and Psalm 51)?

2. Read 2 Samuel 19:24-30. Who is Mephibosheth and what has been his relationship with David in the past (see 2 Samuel 9:1-13)? What did David first ask Mephibosheth and how did Mephibosheth respond? What happened that was a point of contention between the two of them (see 2 Samuel 16:1-4)? Do you think Mephibosheth was telling the truth? Why or why not? How would you summarize the outcome of the interchange between David and Mephibosheth?

3. Read 2Samuel 19:31-40. How would you summarize the interaction between David and Barzillai? How would you describe David’s heart or motivation in this exchange? What was David trying to accomplish?

4. So what? What about David’s interactions with Shimei, Mephibosheth or Barzillai challenge or encourage you in how you interact with others? How does your past and your walk with God help you to treat others with kindness, forgiveness and grace (see Colossians 3:12-13)? How has forgiving others (or failing to do so) affected your life? Is there anyone in your life that you need to forgive?
