David refuses to harm King Saul. (1-7)

1. Read verses 1-4. Why was Saul seeking David? What were Saul’s intentions when he found David? (See 1 Samuel 18:8-16, 19:1) Why do you think Saul had such intense feelings towards David? Describe what happened in the cave in your own words.

2. Read verses 5-7. How did David feel about his encounter with Saul in the cave? What motivated David to keep his men from hurting Saul? What do David’s thoughts, words and actions teach us about his attitude towards God?

3. Read verses 8-15. Summarize in your own words what David said to Saul. What was David’s attitude towards Saul? How can you see David’s faith in action through his words to Saul?

4. Read verses 16-22. How did Saul respond to David? What did Saul concede about David’s future? What did Saul request from David and how did David respond to his request?

5. So what? What do you learn about David’s character and view of God from this account? How can you follow David’s example in how you interact with difficult people in your own life?
