SERMON NOTES:

2 Samuel 5:1-16

The work and plans of God are unstoppable.

All the people of Israel confirm David, God’s anointed, as King. (1-5)

God is faithful to accomplish his work in you and through you. (Phil. 1:6, Eph. 2:10)

David captures the most significant city of all time and history. (6-10)

Fear not! The Almighty God, who is sovereign over all time and history, is in control of all the details of your life. (Matt. 10:30-31)

David grows in power and prestige. (11-16)

God uses imperfect people. (2 Cor. 12:9-10)

study questions:

1. Read verses 1-5. What are the reasons the elders of Israel gave David for why he should be their king? Over who was David already king (see also 2 Samuel 2:1-4)? What is significant about David being anointed king over all of Israel (see also 1 Samuel 16:1-13)? What do we learn about God through David being anointed king?

2. Read verses 6-12. What did David do soon after becoming king over all of Israel? Why is Jerusalem called the “city of David”? Why did David experience so much success as king? What evidence of David’s success do you see in these verses? According to verse 12, why did God establish David as king and establish His kingdom? What do you learn about God’s attitude towards you as a Christ-follower?

3. Read verses 13-16. What did David do once he moved to Jerusalem? What do you think the Lord thought about his actions? What do David’s actions teach us about his attitude at the time? How do David’s actions in these verses serve as an indicator of his future actions in 2 Samuel 11?

4. So what? What about David’s character and actions are a positive example for your walk with Christ? What about David’s character and actions are a negative example for you? What do you learn about God in these verses that encourages your relationship with Him? What is one thing you are taking away from this passage that applies to your life?
