For the Next Lesson – Genesis 49:1-27
- Read verses 1-4. What was Jacob planning to do, and what weight do his words carry (see vs. 1)? What is Jacob’s prediction for Reuben, and what events in the life of Reuben motivated this prediction (see Genesis 35:22)? What can we learn from the life of Reuben (see Galatians 6:7-8)? How does this concept work itself out when we consider how the grace of God affects our lives?
- Read verses 5-7. What violence is in the background of Simeon and Levi (see Genesis 34:25-29)? What motivated this violence? What does the Bible say about our anger? Consider Ephesians 4:26-27 and James 1:19-20. How does anger affect your life, and how do you need to grow in dealing with your anger?
- Read verses 8-21. While Jacob predicts the future of 7 different sons in verses 8-21, let’s focus on Judah. Read Revelation 5:5. Who is the person referred to, and what is this person called? As you consider Matthew 1:1-16 who are Judah’s two most prominent descendants? Now consider Genesis 8-12. What key words predict that both King David and the King of kings would descend from Judah? What do the predictions about the descendants of Judah in these verses teach us about God and His plan? Why is this important?
- Read verses 22-27. What predictions are made about Joseph? There are 5 names of God listed within the blessing of Joseph. What are the five names, and what do each of these names teach us about the character of God?
- So what. What have you been reminded about God in these verses that encourages you? How does this reality about God affect your life today?
