For the Next Lesson - Genesis 48:1-22

  1. Read verses 1-4. What does Jacob call God in verse 3, and what does this name teach us about God? Why do you think this title/name is important for Jacob, and why is it important for us? What did God do for Jacob at Luz? How did God do this according to verse 4, and why would this have been an encouragement to Jacob? As you look back on your life, how can you see the blessings of God Almighty? Are you grateful for the blessings God has brought into your life… even the “challenging” ones?
  2. Read verses 5-16. In your own words, summarize how Jacob blessed Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim. When Jacob blessed Joseph in verse 15, he described God in three different ways. What are these three ways, and why is each of these significant in the life of Jacob? How does each aspect of God described here affect your life and your relationship with God? Which one of these three aspects of God sticks out to you most and why? How can understanding these aspects of God bless your walk with God and your life?
  3. Read verses 17-20. What can you learn from these verses about God’s sovereign authority? Do you have a good attitude when God chooses something for you or a loved one that you don’t like? Why or why not? How can you grow in submitting to God’s sovereign authority? How does submission to God’s authority affect your life?
  4. Read verses 21-22. What truths and promises did Jacob want Joseph to remember? Do you believe these same truths and promises? Why or why not?
  5. So what. What are you taking away from your study of this passage that directly applies to your life?
