For the Next Lesson: 1 Corinthians 12:1-30

  1. Read verses 1-3. According to verse 1 what subject does chapters 12-14 in 1 Corinthians address? How can we determine if someone is truly following Jesus according to verse 3? What does it look like when Jesus is truly “Lord” of someone’s life? Is Jesus Lord of your life? How so?
  2. Read verses 4-6. Who is the source of spiritual gifts? How can you see evidence of the Trinity in these verses? Who empowers us to walk through life honoring God (see John 15:5, 2 Peter 1:3)
  3. Read verses 7-11. What does Paul teach is a primary purpose of spiritual gifts according to verse 7? Who gives out spiritual gifts, and who decides who gets which gifts? What should be our response to the delegation of spiritual gifts? Is this easy or hard to accomplish? How so?
  4. Read verses 12-30. Why do you think Paul emphasizes over and over that there is one body of Christ with many different parts/members? How can mutual appreciation of diverse spiritual gifts promote unity in the body of Christ? Why is it hard to be satisfied with our own gifts and celebrate the gifts of others? How can dissatisfaction and jealousy of spiritual gifts cause disunity in the body of Christ?
  5. So what. In these verses we learn about the purpose, source, variety and unifying influence of God-apportioned spiritual gifts. What have you learned about spiritual gifts that encourage or challenges you? Do you know your spiritual gifts? Are you using your gifts? How can you grow in how you use your gifts for the good of the body of Christ?
