study questions:

For the Next Lesson: Colossians 1:13-23

1. Read verses 13-14. What is the “domain of darkness” and why were we there? Which part of the Trinity is doing the rescuing according to verse 13? What does the word “redemption” mean? Why did our sins need to be forgiven? Read John 3:16. How does this Gospel verse in John relate to our text in Colossians? How would you describe Jesus to someone?

2. Read verses 15-17. How does Paul describe Jesus? What role did Jesus play in the creation of the world? Why is that significant? What is Jesus supreme over? What is Jesus supreme over in your life personally? What is He holding together? Why is it important to remember Jesus’ divinity? What might happen if you thought about Jesus’ supremacy more in your life? What can you do to remind yourself of Jesus’ strength and power?

3. Read verses 18-20. If Jesus is the head of the church, where do you fit in (think 1 Cor. 12:12-31)? What comfort can come from knowing that Jesus rose from the dead? If Jesus was fully divine, why did he die? Where do you fit in these gospel verses?

4. Read verses 21-23. How does Paul describe your life before Christ? In your own experience, is he right? What is Jesus’ plan for after salvation? What is your role in sanctification according to Paul? What role does hope have for Christians? According to verse 23, what can move away, you or hope? Why is that significant?

5. So What. What is one truth or reality about Jesus you can meditate on this week that will encourage you to trust Him more?
