study questions:
For the Next Lesson – Genesis 12:4-9
1.Read verses 1-3. What did God tell Abram to do, and where was he supposed to go? What was the ultimate purpose of Abram’s calling (see verses 2-3)?
2.Read verses 4-6. How did Abram respond to God’s call? What details about Abram’s response are listed here in these verses? Who went with him? Where did he go? What was his financial status? Take a few moments to think through what it would have looked like for Abram and his family, people and possessions to make the journey from Haran to Canaan.
3.Read verses 7-9. What did God say to Abram? What do you think it was like for Abram when God appeared to him and spoke directly to him? How does God’s statement reinforce the promises God already made to Abram in verses 1-3? How did Abram respond? Did Abram ever settle in one place that he could call home? How can we build an “alter” to the Lord in our lives? What does it really mean for Abram to call upon the Lord? What does it like for us to call upon the Lord? Do you call upon the Lord? How so?
4.Read Hebrews 11:8-10. How do these verses describe Abram’s response to God’s calling? What was the key thing that enabled Abram to respond the way he did? What was Abram looking forward to when he responded to God’s calling (see also Hebrews 11:13-16)? Do you look forward to the same thing? Why or why not?
5.So what. Read Hebrews 11:1, 6. What role does faith play in our relationship with God? Are you walking by faith in your life? How can you tell if you are walking by faith? What keeps you from walking by faith? How can you grow in how you walk by faith?
