study questions:
For the Next Lesson: Genesis 2:1-3
1. Read Genesis 2:1-2. What had God “finished” from the previous six days? Why is it important to understand the work God had done? What did God do on the 7th day? Why do you think God did this on the 7th day of creation? Is this something God needed? Why or why not?
2. Read Genesis 2:3. What are two other things God did on the 7th day? What does each of these things mean? Why do you think God explained these details about the 7th day in verse 3? Why is this verse significant for us? How does it apply to us?
3. Read Exodus 20:8-11. What are the Israelites commanded to do in the 4th of the 10 commandments? What is the foundation for this command according to verse 11? So, did the idea of keeping the Sabbath day holy originate in the 10 commandments or does it originally come from Genesis 2:1-3? Does this matter? Why or why not?
4. Read Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2 and Revelation 1:10. On what day did the first Christians worship God? Why did they start worshipping God on this day? Should we follow this pattern of worship on Sunday or worship on Saturday like the Hebrews? Why?
5. So what. What “Sabbath” principles about rest and worship can we learn from all of the passages from this study (see also Mark 2:27-28)? How are “Sabbath” principles beneficial for us as people? Practically speaking, how can you specifically practice the “Sabbath” principles we learn from these passages?
