study questions:
For the Next Lesson: Genesis 2:4-17
1. Read verses 4-6. Genesis 2:4-25 describes in more detail when God created the first people on day 6 of creation from chapter 1. Based on verses 4-6, in what condition was the earth when God created man? God created man on day 6 of creation and plants on day 3. So, how do you think there could be “no bush” and “no small plant” on day 6 just before God created man (see vs. 5)? What is a possible solution to this dilemma as you compare 2:4-6 to 1:11-13?
2. Read verse 7. What observations can you make about how God created the first man? What are the two steps God used to make man? What are two key parts of every human being? Is this significant for how we see ourselves in this life? Is this significant for what we will be like as people in heaven? How so? What does this verse teach us about God?
3. Read verses 8-14. What was the setting like where God put the first man to live? What kinds of trees did God cause to grow? What did these trees provide? What two trees are listed by name? Why is it important to note these two specific trees based on what is coming in chapter 3? Do you believe God provides for us now in the same way He provided for Adam? Why or why not? If you believe God provides for us today in a similar way as in the garden, how does this affect how we walk through life?
4. Read verses 15-17. What was Adam’s job in the Garden of Eden? Since God gave Adam meaningful work to do before sin entered the world, what does this teach us about how we should view meaningful work today in our lives? What command did God give Adam? What were the consequences for disobedience? Do we face consequences today for disobeying God as Christians? How so?
5. So what. What sticks out to you most about the creation of the first man? What do you learn about who you are as a person? What do you learn about God? What is one thing you can apply to your life and how you walk with God?
