For the Next Lesson – Genesis 17:15-27
1. Warm-up. When in your life have you struggled to trust God? What was the situation, and how did it turn out?
2. Read verses 15-17. What did God tell Abraham about Sarah? Compare and contrast the promises for Sarah in verses 15-16 with the promises for Abraham in Genesis 17:3-8? In verse 17, how did Abraham respond to the promises for Sarah? What did Abraham’s response reveal about his faith and his view of God? Have you ever struggled in a similar way as Abraham? How so?
3. Read verses 18-21. How would you summarize the interaction between God and Abraham in these verses? What does the name Isaac mean, and how can this name help us to trust God? What does the name Ishmael mean, and how can this name help us to trust God?
4. Read verses 22-27. Though Abraham had been struggling to trust God, what did he do next? What do Abraham’s actions teach us about Abraham and his faith?
5. So what. We all face times when our faith is challenged. What can you learn from this passage about how God responds to us when we are struggling with our faith? What can we learn about what we should do when we are personally struggling with our faith?
