For the Next Lesson – Genesis 18:1-15

  1. Read verses 1-8. Who were the three men who appeared to Abraham (see vv. 1, 10, 13)? Where was Abraham when they appeared (see Genesis 13:18, 14:13)? What was this place to Abraham? How did Abraham respond to these men, and what did Abraham do? Do you think Abraham knew he was hosting the Lord? Why or why not (see also Genesis 12:1, 12:7, 13:14, 15:13, 17:1-3)?
  2. Read verses 9-10. What did the Lord say to Abraham? Had Abraham heard this before (17:21)? Why do you think the Lord came to Abraham’s home to reiterate this promise? What does this teach us about God and how He interacts with us? Have you experienced God relating to you in a similar way?
  3. Read verses 11-15. How did Sarah respond to the promise from the Lord, and what did she say in verses 11-12? Could you see yourself responding like Sarah in a similar situation? What did the Lord say to Abraham in verses 13-14? What was the question asked in verse 14, and what does this remind us about God (see Genesis 17:1, Luke 1:36-37 and Luke 18:27)? How did Sarah respond in verse 15? Why do you think she was afraid?
  4. So what. What have you learned or been reminded about God in this passage? We all face situations and events in life that seem impossible and overwhelming. Think of one of those situations in your life (past or present). How can the things we learn about God in these verses affect the way you approach this situation? How would your relationship with God, your stress, your joy, your relationship with others, etc. be changed?
