For the Next Lesson – Genesis 18:16-33

1. Read verses 16-19. What question was God considering about Abraham? What factors about Abraham were influencing God’s decision? Why are these factors important for Abraham and for us? What do these verses teach us about God expectations of Abraham? How are these expectations fulfilled in real, everyday life for Abraham? How can we fulfill these expectations in our lives (see also Isaiah 1:17 and Jeremiah 22:3)?

2. Read verses 20-22. Why was God troubled about Sodom and Gomorrah? From where do you think the outcry was coming? What do you think was going on in Sodom and Gomorrah that was so gravely sinful and disturbing to God (consider Genesis 18:19, Isaiah 1:17, Jeremiah 22:3, James 1:17)? What does this teach us about the heart and character of God?

3. Read verses 23-25. Why was Abraham concerned with God bringing judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah? On what basis did Abraham make his appeal to God? Do you think Abraham is being respectful? Why or why not? What do you learn here about Abraham’s heart?

4. Read verses 26-33. How would you summarize the rest of the conversation between Abraham and God? Why do you think Abraham kept going back over and over again to God? Why do you think God was so patient with Abraham (see verses 18: 25, 27, 30, 32)? What are your overall impressions of this conversation?

5. So what. Should this interaction between God and Abraham serve as a model for how we interact with God? Why or why not? What should our hearts and attitudes be like when we approach God? Take some time to describe how you want your heart to be when you approach God. It may be helpful to consider Isaiah 6:1-5, Romans 5:1-2 and Hebrews 4:16. How can you grow in how you approach and interact with God?
