SERMON NOTES:
Amos 1-2
Yahweh roars His judgment of the surrounding nations. (1:1-25)
Yahweh roars His judgment of Israel. (2:6-16)
study questions:
1. Read verses 1:1-2. What do you learn about Amos? What does Amos say the Lord is doing in verse 2? Why do you think the word “roar” is used? How do the people respond?
2. Read verses 1:3-2:5 straight through. Note that in 1:3, 1:6, 1:9, 1:11, 1:13, 2:1 and 2:4 God speaks a judgment to a different nation.
a. What words does Amos use to start each mini-section of judgment? What point do you think Amos is making by repeating this statement? What message should we hear?
b. In each mini-section Amos says the words “for”, “because” and “so” to communicate that he will judge, the reason for judgment and how he will judge. Why do you think Amos includes this repetition? What does this teach us about God’s attitude toward sin?
3. Read verses 2:6-8. For what sins is God judging Israel? Have you ever been guilty of any of these sins? Are there any sins in your life that are habitual for you?
4. Read verses 2:9-11. What does Amos remind the Israelites about? Why do you think God is reminding Israel about this right after accusing them of their sin?
5. Read verses 2:12-16. What does God promise to do in these verses? What do you learn about God?
6. So what. Does your attitude toward your own sin reflect God’s attitude toward sin? Why or why not? Take a few minutes to read Psalm 51:1-4, then spend some time in prayer. Ask God to help you to hate/grieve your sin; but also thank God for His unlimited, never ending grace and mercy.
