For the Next Lesson: 1 Corinthians 10:14-11:1

1. Read verse 14. What is Paul’s attitude toward the Corinthians? What is Paul’s command? How would you define idolatry? Is Idolatry something we as Christians struggle with today? How so? How does one flee from idolatry?

2. In verses 15-22 Paul explains three arguments against idolatry. Read verses 15-18. In these verses Paul explains that participation in communion means you are identifying yourself with Christ. Therefore, with whom are we identifying when practicing idolatry? Read verses 19-21. According to these verses who is being honored when practicing idolatry? Read verse 22. How does God feel about idolatry? Why do you think Paul talks about the strength of God?

3. In verses 23-30 Paul explains how we should turn from idolatry and use our freedom in Christ for a greater purpose. Read verse 23. What are the last two words in verse 23? How should we use our Christian freedom (see also 8:1)? Read verse 24. According to this verse, for what should we use our freedom (see also Philippians 2:3-4)? Read verses 25-27. Based on what Paul says here, what is more important, legalism or liberty? Do you tend toward legalism or liberty? How does this affect your life? Read verses 28-30. How should we use our freedom when faced with conflicting convictions about a situation (see also 8:9)?

4. In verses 10:31-11:1 we see the ultimate purpose for our freedom in Christ. Read verse 31. What is the ultimate goal of our freedom? What does “glory” mean? In what area of our life should we bring God glory? What does this look like in everyday life? Read verses 10:32-11:1. Do Paul’s instructions in these verses contradict his instructions in verse 31? Why or why not? What is another purpose for our freedom according to verse 33?

5. So what. In what way do you struggle with idolatry? What challenges God for first place in your life? Do you glorify God in EVERY area of your life? What prevents you from glorifying God? What is one thing you could do to bring God more glory in your life?
