For the Next Lesson: Core Doctrine of the Reformation and Beyond
On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg Church sparking the Reformation. As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation this October 31, 2017 we pause to consider the great doctrines of the Reformation that continue to define our faith today.
1. Read 2 Peter 1:21 and 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Who wrote the Bible according to these verses? How has God used human beings to produce His Words in written form? What level of authority or influence should the Bible have in our lives? What is the Bible useful for? What does it produce in us? Does the Bible hold a place of prominence in your life equal to what is communicated in these two passages? Why or why not?
2. Read Ephesians 2:8-9. What role does faith have in our salvation? What role does grace have? What role do our works or performance have? How would you summarize this verse in your own words? Why are these theological concepts about faith and grace foundational for us as Christians? How would Christianity change if grace and faith were not at the heart of our walk with God?
3. Read Colossians 1:19-22. What do you learn about the nature of Christ and who He is in these verses? What role does Christ play in our salvation, and how does he accomplish it? Read John 14:6 and Acts 16:30-31. How would you respond to the person who says there are many different ways to God? Based on these verses, what place should Christ have in our lives? Is Christ actively and regularly in His rightful place in your life?
4. Read 1 Corinthians 10:31 and 1 Peter 4:11. What should be our primary goal in life? What prevents us from accomplishing this goal? How can we get better at accomplishing this goal?
5. So what. Which of these core doctrines do you best embrace in your life? Which one do you struggle with the most? What is one way you can grow to better embrace these doctrines?
