study questions:

For the Next Lesson

1. Read Philippians 3:12-13a. What is the “all this” Paul is talking about? This could be his teachings found in 1:9-11, 2:1-18 and 3:7-11 or some part of this; say what you think and fill in some details.

2. There is a teaching in the Protestant community that believes it is possible you can attain perfection here on earth. Read Romans 6 and 1 John 3:4-6 and defend this view from these passages even if you don’t hold this view.

3. Now read Philippians 3:12-14 and 1 John 1:8-2:2 and defend the view that we cannot be perfect this side of heaven.

4. Read Philippians 3:15-16. What subject matter do you think Paul is referring to in these verses?

5. How does Paul comfort sincere believers who hold differing views?

6. Read Philippians 3:21. What is Paul’s command to you in this section? Be detailed in explaining it. What people group does he warn against? What encouragement does he give? Be detailed.

7. What questions do you have after studying chapter three? What has encouraged, challenged or inspired you in this chapter?
