study questions:

1. Read verses 25-27. What were the crowds focused on? What does Jesus want them to focus on? How is our thinking often like the crowd’s thinking? How should we reorient our thinking? Why is this concept important for each of us?

2. Read verses 28-34. What was the crowd focused on (vs. 28)? What did Jesus want them to learn (vs. 29)? How did the crowd respond to Jesus’ teaching (vv. 30-31)? What is the point Jesus was making in verses 32-33?

3. Read verses 35-40. What do you think Jesus means when he says, “I am the bread of life”? Twice in these verses (vs. 37, 40) Jesus talks about the people that are given to Him by the Father. What do you think Jesus means when he talks about God giving Him people? (See also Eph. 1:11, Rom. 8:28-30.) How does Jesus’ statement in verse 40 line-up with this idea of God the Father giving Jesus certain people? How can/should we reconcile the biblical concepts of predestination/election and human responsibility to respond to the Gospel? (Note: this is a difficult doctrine that has been debated for centuries.)

4. Read verses 41-46. How did the crowd respond in verses 41-42 to Jesus’ teaching? What point did Jesus remind them about in verses 43-46?

5. Read verses 47-51. These verses summarize the main points Jesus made in the preceding verses. Take a few moments to list the main points that Jesus highlights in verses 47-51. Which of these points do you think was most remarkable to the Jews that were being taught by Jesus? Which of these points most grabs your attention?

6. So what? What from this passage challenges you in your walk with God? What is one thing you are taking away from this passage that applies specifically to your life?
