For the Next Lesson: 1 Corinthians 11:17-34
.Warm-up:When you think about the Lord’s Supper or Communion, what comes to mind? What have been your past experiences with Communion? Is Communion something you look forward to? Why or why not?
.Read verses 17-22. What was happening when the Christians in Corinth “come together” as a church family? How were they treating each other? What were they doing? What were the focused on? Why do you think this bothered Paul so much?
.Read verses 23-27. According to verses 24 and 25, why do we eat the bread and drink the cup? According to verse 26, why do we eat the bread and drink the cup? How does the Lord’s Supper help us to both remember and proclaim what Jesus did for us on the Cross? Considering verses 17-22, how were the Corinthians taking the Lord’s Supper in an “unworthy manner”? How can we in the 21st Century take the Lord’s Supper in an unworthy manner?
.Read verses 28-33. What should each of us do to prepare ourselves for taking the Lord’s Supper? What does this look like in real life? What can happen if we take the Lord’s Supper in an unworthy manner? How does this make you feel? When you consider God’s discipline, what comes to mind? What does the Bible teach us about God’s discipline (see Hebrews 12:5-11)? What do these verses in 1 Corinthians teach you about God’s perspective concerning the significance of the Lord’s Supper and the manner in which we take it?
.So what. Based on your study of this passage, summarize the purpose of taking the Lord’s Supper. What are some key issues we need to consider as we take the Lord’s Supper? When you personally participate in the Lord’s Supper, do you experience what Jesus intended? How so? What is one key thing you can take from this passage that applies directly to your life?
